Johnny Depp has returned to the spotlight, sparking varied reactions with his latest portrayal. His transformation into Ebenezer Scrooge in the new “Ebenezer” trailer released on Thursday received enthusiastic praise from fans. However, the film’s suggestion to reconsider the classic tale left some confused.
The trailer prompted one viewer to note, “From the trailer I can confirm, it’s still the same story. It’s the same as Scrooge, and Muppets Christmas Carol. So don’t worry about having to think again, you really don’t.” Another questioned the marketing approach, saying, “Why is the tagline ‘Think you know his story? Think again.’ when every single thing in the trailers is faithful to Dickens? That is his story and we all know it. This might be a good version, but why is it being marketed as revisionist? What story do you think we think we know?”
Johnny Depp, seen in this role for the upcoming “Ebenezer” film, brings a fresh take despite some fans’ skepticism about marketing choices. Other fans are excited to see Depp’s interpretation of the well-known Christmas narrative.
“So many have done this story and I still will watch it,” expressed a hopeful viewer. Depp’s participation in “Ebenezer” denotes his first major Hollywood studio film role in years. He previously appeared in the 2023 French drama “Jeanne du Barry” and directed “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.” He also stars with Penélope Cruz in the forthcoming thriller “Day Drinker.”
For some, this surge in projects indicates Depp’s revitalized presence in Hollywood. “This looks so awesome, I’m glad Johnny Depp is back in action,” one user shared. “Depp is back at the top of his game,” commented another. A hopeful fan added, “Interesting take on Ebenezer. Johnny Depp might get an Oscar for this one.”
Depp’s film career began with “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984, and he gained fame as Tom Hanson on the series “21 Jump Street.” His collaboration with Tim Burton on “Edward Scissorhands” in 1990 marked a significant shift in his career. His role as Jack Sparrow boosted “Pirates of the Caribbean” to blockbuster status and earned Depp his first Academy Award nomination. He received further nods for “Finding Neverland” and “Sweeney Todd,” winning a Golden Globe for the latter.
However, Depp’s Hollywood success took a downturn amid personal challenges and box-office setbacks. His high-profile legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, including the widely covered defamation trial in Virginia, impacted his career. In 2020, Depp lost a libel case against The Sun, which labeled him a “wife beater.” The Virginia jury found Heard liable for defamation related to her 2018 Washington Post op-ed on domestic abuse.
