Joanna Gaines and her husband, Chip Gaines, rose to fame with their hit show “Fixer Upper.” Despite their success, the couple chose to leave the intense demands of the industry behind. Years later, Joanna shared her reasons, citing a deep sense of exhaustion she termed “soul weariness.”
Joanna explained on the “Joy 101 with Hoda Kotb” podcast that the glamour and recognition did not fulfill them. Both she and Chip realized they felt like cogs in a machine, losing the intentionality that once drove them. The focus shifted from growing their brand and show to valuing their health and happiness above all else.
Since their show debuted in 2013, Joanna and Chip became well-known beyond home renovation circles. Nonetheless, they concluded “Fixer Upper” in 2017 to prioritize their well-being and family life. Joanna stated that despite building their business for nearly 25 years, they lost sight of their goals.
Despite stepping away, the decision came with challenges. Joanna acknowledged the impact on their team, recognizing the pressures it placed. Yet, the break gave them clarity, and they reassessed their priorities. Joanna recounted feeling burnout acutely, finding herself avoiding work and seeking excuses to pause.
This deeper exhaustion differed from physical tiredness. Even while her body endured, Joanna experienced what she described as “soul weariness.” She warned against ignoring this dangerous level of fatigue, referring to it as a “holy fear.” The Gaines family, including their five children, recognized that relentless work wasn’t the solution.
In 2003, Joanna and Chip married, eventually raising five children. As they planted roots in Waco, Texas, their Magnolia businesses flourished. Their successful ventures include Magnolia Market at the Silos, Magnolia Table, and many others. The couple also launched the Magnolia Network, which replaced DIY Network on television.
Their influence extends into publishing and retail, from “Magnolia Journal” to a Target product line. They even opened Hotel 1928 in Waco in 2023, continuing their theme of creative renovations. Through it all, Joanna and Chip have prioritized their health and purpose over fame.
