Investigation in Progress After Woman Found Dead in Central Park

An investigation is currently taking place after a woman in her 60s was discovered dead with stab wounds in Central Park, New York City on Sunday morning. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) received a 911 call reporting an unconscious individual near East Drive and East 74th Street at around 9:43 a.m.

Upon their arrival, officers found an adult female, approximately in her 60s, who was unresponsive and had stab wounds. Her body was located inside a gazebo near the Central Park Boathouse, a well-known restaurant in the park.

Investigators have not disclosed how long the woman was in the area before being discovered and have not revealed if they believe she was specifically targeted. The police have not made any arrests, and no suspect information is available at this time.

The incident has not yet been determined to be a homicide. The NYPD referred any inquiries regarding the cause and manner of death to the Office of the Medical Examiner.

Significant attention often surrounds incidents in Central Park due to its status as a major landmark. Data from the New York Times indicates that between January 1 and September 20, 2026, no murders occurred in the park. Similarly, there were no reported killings during the comparable period last year.

While violent crimes in the park are rare, they often attract national attention and heighten public safety concerns. Notable past incidents include the 1989 assault of a jogger, known as the Central Park Five case, and the 1986 murder of Jennifer Levin by Robert Chambers, labeled the ‘Preppy Killer.’

Currently, detectives are assessing how the woman sustained her injuries. They are examining surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence to piece together the events. The case remains open, and further developments are expected as evidence is gathered.
