Interpol Names Ukrainian Woman as Suspect in Monaco Bombing

Interpol has identified a 39-year-old Ukrainian woman as the main suspect in a bombing incident in Monaco. The police organization named Anastasiia Berezovska in a Red Notice for her arrest on charges of attempted murder, placing an explosive in a public space with criminal intent, and being part of a criminal conspiracy. Berezovska is still at large.

The bombing, which occurred at the entrance of an apartment building, reportedly targeted a Ukrainian tycoon linked to Russia. Although Monaco authorities have not named the three injured individuals, media reports suggest Ukrainian construction tycoon Vadym Yermolaiev was among them. Yermolaiev, who renounced his Ukrainian citizenship nearly ten years ago, was targeted by Ukrainian sanctions in 2023 due to his Russian ties. The explosion also injured a woman and a child, one of whom remains in critical condition, along with two other people who experienced minor injuries.

Monaco’s deputy prosecutor, Morgan Raymond, indicated that the complexity of the explosive device and the method of operation suggest an accomplice may have assisted the person who planted the bomb. The bomb was remotely detonated, and its remnants are under analysis in France.

The incident has disrupted the peace in Monaco, a location known for its affluent lifestyle, tax benefits, and famous royal family. Prince Albert II condemned the act, stating that all public services have been mobilized to ensure safety. However, prosecutors have not yet determined a motive.

Interpol’s notice describes the suspect as having a possible snake tattoo on her right arm and lists her physical characteristics. She was initially misidentified as a man. However, CCTV footage and witness reports redirected the investigation, identifying her as a woman dressed in disguise. The notice includes photos showing her holding an electronic device.

Two men were briefly held during the investigation but have been released. Investigators traced the suspect’s rented vehicle with German license plates and her route through Europe to Germany, where she last resided. German police, including special forces, recently searched an apartment near Frankfurt and secured a vehicle tied to the suspect.

Berezovska’s escape is part of broader geopolitical tensions. Ukraine has reportedly targeted Russian figures amid the war, activities usually limited to Ukraine or Russian territories. In December 2024, Ukraine’s security service claimed responsibility for the death of a senior Russian military officer. Western intelligence claims Russia has also increased targeted attacks since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
