The exterior of Memorial Stadium at Indiana University in Bloomington features anti-aircraft guns and artifacts from the USS Indiana, including a mast. These displays honor Indiana residents who have served in the U.S. armed forces.
This setting adds context as No. 5 Indiana, the reigning national champion, hosts No. 4 Ohio State in a major Big Ten college football showdown. The event highlights the ties between campus sports and military traditions.
Military Presence at Indiana University
Indiana University values its military history and personnel. Vasiliios Koultourides, an Indiana senior and member of the Indiana National Guard, acknowledges that military personnel receive respect and recognition at the university.
Beyond artifacts, Indiana University documents military service through a unique historical record. The Golden Book, housed in the Memorial Student Union, lists the names of all associated with the university who have served since 1898. It includes veterans from the War of 1812 to World War II.
In 2016, the university created a digital version of the Golden Book, expanding its reach to over 25,000 names. Zainab Diouf of the Indiana National Guard notes the book’s uniqueness and encourages students to visit.
Supporting Veterans and Military Students
Indiana University features the Center for Veterans and Military Students, offering support in benefits, scholarships, and career planning. Koultourides appreciates the welcoming environment and camaraderie it offers for veterans and military students.
Across campus, athletic teams observe “Salute to Service” games each season, involving military students in various roles from color guard to crowd engagement at events.
At football games, military students perform pushups after touchdowns and help operate a cannon. Koultourides highlights the respect and inclusion veterans receive in campus activities.
The active presence and support for military members at Indiana University reinforce their appreciation for those who serve. This integration enriches the campus culture and honors their contributions.
