Nutrition advice usually highlights the importance of the food we choose, but recent research suggests that when we eat can be just as crucial. A study involving over 31,000 U.S. adults examined how the timing of the first and last meals impacts mortality risk and life expectancy. Published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, these findings contribute to understanding how meal timing could align with our body’s natural rhythms.
First Meal Timing and Mortality Risk
When the first meal of the day is consumed has significant effects on health outcomes. The study showed that eating breakfast between 7 and 8 a.m. is linked to lower mortality risk. As breakfast timing is delayed, the risks increase. Adults who ate after noon had a 29% higher risk of death from any cause and a 43% higher risk of cardiovascular-related deaths. Even a late breakfast between 10 a.m. and noon showed increased risks, with a 19% rise in all-cause mortality and a 59% increase in stroke-related deaths compared to earlier breakfast times.
Effects of Last Meal Timing
Meal timing isn’t only about when we start the day. The study found that eating the last meal between 7 and 8 p.m. presents the lowest mortality risk. Those finishing before 7 p.m. had a 13% higher risk of death from any cause. The worst outcomes emerged among those eating after midnight, with a 27% increase in all-cause mortality and a 51% boost in heart disease-related deaths compared to the optimal evening window.
Life Expectancy and Eating Patterns
The timing of meals also influences life expectancy. Among adults over 50, consuming the first meal between 8 and 10 a.m. was linked to an average reduction of 0.9 years in life expectancy. Waiting until after noon was associated with a loss of about 2.5 years. Similar patterns were seen for the last meal. Eating before 7 p.m. corresponded to 1.2 fewer years, and eating after midnight led to a decrease of 2.4 years.
Study Methodology and Conclusions
The study relied on data from 31,044 adults aged 40 and above who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2018. Detailed 24-hour dietary records were collected to examine meal timing against mortality data from the National Death Index until December 31, 2019. The average follow-up period was 8.6 years.
The authors emphasized that this observational research shows associations between meal timings and health outcomes rather than direct causation. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that meal timing should be included in discussions about nutrition choices for healthy aging and disease prevention.
