Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against Angel Israel Deras-Rivas, a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador. He is accused of leaving a 14-month-old toddler unattended in a bathtub, resulting in the child’s death, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Deras-Rivas was detained in Garner, North Carolina, following the tragic incident. Officials urge local authorities not to release him from custody. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized the Biden administration’s immigration policies, asserting they played a role in this case.
Mullin stated, “This criminal illegal alien has been charged with murder and felony child abuse after letting a 14-month-old drown in a bathtub.” The arrest warrant cited by The Raleigh News & Observer details that Deras-Rivas was caring for his stepchild when the incident occurred. The child died after being left unsupervised in a bathtub filled with water.
The marriage between Deras-Rivas and the child’s mother took place just months before this incident. According to DHS, Deras-Rivas unlawfully entered the United States through Texas in October 2023 and was subsequently released under the current administration’s policies.
ICE has requested that officials in North Carolina ensure Deras-Rivas is not released and that he be handed over to federal custody. ICE’s detainer involves notifying law enforcement of an individual’s release and possibly holding that person for an additional 48 hours to facilitate their transfer to federal custody.
