Jim Jordan, House Judiciary Committee Chairman and Republican from Ohio, has expressed that subpoenas may be necessary if county prosecutors accused of leniency towards illegal immigrants who commit crimes do not cooperate. The committee is looking into district attorneys within ‘sanctuary jurisdictions.’ These areas have been accused of considering immigration status in criminal cases, even when the crime is unrelated to residency status.
Jordan stated, ‘If we have to, we’ll use subpoenas to get the documents that we think they may not be giving us.’ He outlined the process: requesting documents, explaining the need, and working with the offices involved. Subpoenas will be used if necessary to obtain facts.
“If we have to use subpoenas, we certainly will do that … but we want to know the facts,” Jordan explained.
The committee’s focus includes Steve Descano, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney. His actions came under scrutiny following the murder of Stephanie Minter, allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant from Sierra Leone who had over 30 prior arrests. Fairfax County’s sanctuary status means local law enforcement does not have to assist federal immigration authorities.
Jordan criticized sanctuary policies, asking, ‘You’re going to tell local law enforcement not to work with federal law enforcement when it comes to enforcing federal law?’ He referenced cases where offenders were released due to these policies, highlighting the potential dangers, especially in areas near national security centers like Fairfax County.
Descano received significant campaign contributions from a political action committee supported by billionaires, including George Soros. This has drawn attention to the campaign funding and policies of district attorneys in sanctuary jurisdictions.
Jordan also plans to investigate other areas, noting similar practices in New York with Alvin Bragg and in Philadelphia with Larry Krasner.
In related legal actions, the Department of Justice has accused Maryland of deliberately hindering the deportations of illegal immigrants. Jordan’s committee may explore this as part of its broader investigation into sanctuary jurisdictions.
