During a fan expo in Tennessee, the 80-year-old actor discussed the camaraderie on the “Happy Days” set, emphasizing that the cast functioned as an ensemble where stardom took a backseat.
Winkler recounted an instance involving a guest star who did not blend well with the team. He explained, “We were an ensemble. We worked hard at making it funny every week.” One guest star, who appeared multiple times, disrupted the harmony by frequently mentioning his fan mail, prompting Winkler to advise, “We don’t talk about that on the set; we are all here as one.” Despite this, the guest star, whom Winkler discreetly referred to as portraying a character named Eugene, persisted in his behavior.
Beyond “Happy Days,” Winkler has enjoyed a thriving career in both film and television. He received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in “Heroes” and starred in films like “The Waterboy,” “Holes,” and “Click.” His enduring career continues with new experiences, such as filming his first nude scene for “Loot” alongside Maya Rudolph.
Reflecting on his recent projects, Winkler expressed admiration for Maya Rudolph, noting her brilliance and warm personality. In preparation for his role, he was surprised to find only a silk robe as his costume during a January shoot on the beach, describing the cold and windy conditions of the scene. Despite these challenges, he appreciated the camaraderie with Rudolph and the cast.
Throughout his career, Winkler earned two Golden Globe Awards for playing Fonzie, yet he only won his first Emmy Award in 2018 for his role in “Barry” as Gene Cousineau, an acting coach who befriends a wanted assassin. During his Emmy win speech, Winkler highlighted his philosophy of being genuine and prepared to ensure lasting success in the entertainment industry.
