Germany has accused Russia of orchestrating a botched drone sabotage operation at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The German government announced its intention to close Russian diplomatic facilities, heightening tensions after investigators tied Moscow to last month’s attack.
Actions Against Russian Facilities
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that the Russian consulate in Bonn will be shut, and the contract for Russia’s House cultural center in Berlin will be terminated. This decision comes after German authorities linked Moscow to the incident on August 4.
Drone Attack Details
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt revealed forensic evidence and intelligence findings that connect Russia to the attack. Authorities discovered a drone with an explosive device next to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Officials noted that the explosive did not detonate due to a faulty detonator. Germany believes another drone collided with a nearby cargo aircraft, fitting Russia’s established pattern of hybrid operations in Europe.

Russia’s Response
Russia has dismissed the allegations. The Russian Embassy in Berlin labeled the accusation as “absurd,” while Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova promised Russia would respond in a “mirror-image” manner. The embassy described Berlin’s actions as an “unprecedented escalation in Russian-German relations.”
Additional Measures
Wadephul announced additional entry restrictions for Russian citizens and measures targeting Russia’s shadow fleet. He also summoned Russia’s ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechayev.
International Reactions
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed support for Germany’s conclusion, stating on X that the alliance “stands in full solidarity with Germany.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen mentioned that the EU is preparing further sanctions against Russia. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Moscow of heightening regional tensions.

Germany’s Broader Security Concerns
These developments occur as Germany warns of an intensifying campaign of hybrid threats against its military, transportation, and vital infrastructure. Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently cautioned that those guilty of hostile acts towards Germany would “pay a price.”
In a separate matter, German police stated they are investigating explosive and incendiary devices found at a power substation in Brandenburg after a damaged power line caused a temporary outage. Authorities have yet to identify who planted these devices.
