South Third Street in downtown Geneva will serve as the venue for the juried Geneva Arts Fair, an annual event spotlighting talented artisans from across the nation. Among the featured artists is Elizabeth Kindig, a painter specializing in still life and landscapes. She will debut her work in front of the Kane County Historic Courthouse, located between James and Campbell streets. Kindig, who uses oils, acrylics, and pastels, moved from Indiana to her husband’s hometown of Geneva two years ago. Her artistic approach explores color and abstraction, aiming to evoke memories of her childhood farm.
In her statement, Kindig expressed her passion for still life, saying, “I want to celebrate heirlooms often hidden away in attics.” She described how searching for family artifacts in her childhood farmhouse fueled her interest in history, and how painting helps her honor those who valued these objects. Her approach involves meticulous observation of shapes, color, and light, allowing her to convey the essence of these items on canvas.
Kindig’s work extends beyond her family’s heirlooms to include commissioned pieces. She shared an example of painting a late grandfather’s Standard Oil work coat, capturing hand-sewn details, such as a name and repair patch, to preserve its legacy for future generations.
Elizabeth’s husband, Ross Adams, is a native of Geneva. They have a 7-year-old daughter, Maggie. Kindig left her middle school humanities teaching career in northwest Indiana to focus on painting when she moved to Geneva. Her creative inspiration stems from the family farm and its visual elements.
The Geneva Arts Fair provides a platform for artists like Kindig to share their passion and connect with the community. Attendees can witness her artistic process at The Little Traveler, located at 404 S. Third St. in Geneva, where she will be showcasing her work during the event.
