Francesca Hong, a likely Democratic contender for governor in Wisconsin, has attracted attention for her past statements and campaign policies. Supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, Hong once suggested that Thanksgiving celebrations should cease.
“Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621,” she wrote in a deleted social media post, highlighting the historical spread of smallpox among indigenous peoples that holiday commemorations indirectly relate to.
This post, made in November 2020, sheds light on Hong’s progressive approach. She has emerged as a prominent figure in the gubernatorial race and these views have spurred online discussions and mockery.
Stephen Miller, a conservative commentator, commented on the inclusive language she used, exemplified by the term “folx” which acknowledges various marginalized communities.
Hong’s campaign is anchored in her socialist background, aiming to ensure fair treatment for working-class individuals. She holds platform positions on race-based social grants, state-funded grocery stores, and the creation of a state-run bank.
Her campaign momentum has increased recently, with the primary election approaching. Hong’s policy views mirror those of other progressives, such as New York’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Her past statements, like one about experiencing a panic attack at a Culver’s restaurant, also resurfaced, drawing further attention. She cited discomfort from the surrounding demographic as the cause.
“Bold choice for Democrats in Wisconsin running someone statewide who gets a panic attack at Culver’s at the sight of ‘old white people,’” commented Alex Pfeiffer, a former White House official, on social media.
Another comment by an investigative reporter noted misconceptions about the restaurant’s offerings.
The race dynamics have shifted following Mandela Barnes’s withdrawal. Previously a frontrunner, Barnes’s exit is linked to allegations under review. Hong now faces Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley as a primary rival.
Hong has gathered support from nationally prominent progressives, including Representatives Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna, accumulating nearly $709,000 in campaign funds. In contrast, Crowley has raised $250,000 with endorsements from local entities.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers endorsed Crowley, acknowledging his political experience. The primary is scheduled for August 11.
