Michel Martelly, the former president of Haiti, returned to Port-au-Prince on Wednesday. This visit marks a rare appearance in his home country. While Martelly has not specified the reason for his travel, local media suggest he might testify in the investigation into the death of former President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Martelly faces no charges in the case, last visiting Haiti about three years ago.
Supporters welcomed Martelly, who led Haiti from 2011 to 2016, as he navigated through the crowd. His supporters played music, displayed his pictures, and shouted, “The father is back!” and “Long live Martelly!”
Martelly had selected Moïse as his successor; both belonged to the Tèt Kale Party (PHTK), which has been influential in Haitian politics. Despite this, the party did not field a candidate for the upcoming general elections, which have been overdue for more than a decade.
Martelly, also known musically as “Sweet Micky,” has faced corruption accusations for some time. Canada sanctioned him in November 2022, and the U.S. did the same in August 2024, accusing him of facilitating drug trafficking and supporting gangs. In December 2025, the Council of the European Union imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on Haitian politicians, including Martelly. They accused him of arming and financing gangs for political gain and personal interests. Additionally, Haiti’s Anti-Corruption Unit accused him of asset misrepresentation.
Martelly has not publicly responded to these allegations. His return occurs during a period of worsening poverty and escalating gang violence in Haiti.
