Former Gambino Associate John Alite Arrested in New Jersey

John Alite, previously associated with the Gambino crime family, transitioned to a role in public service as a council member in Englishtown, N.J., in 2025. Known for his efforts to reform his image, Alite shared his experiences of leaving behind his mob-related past online.

However, on June 20, 2026, he was arrested on accusations involving extortion and the issuance of threatening behavior. State officials explained the charges against Alite, which encompass theft by extortion, corporate misconduct, usury, and making terroristic threats.

At 63 years old, Alite had been imprisoned for murder linked to his connection with John A. Gotti, but post-release in 2012, he aimed to reinvent his public persona. His journey led him to hold office in Englishtown as of March 2025.

Alongside 67-year-old Stephen Locrotondo, Alite extended loans to individuals with interest rates exceeding 50% annually. These actions, detailed in court documents, involved threatening debtors to secure money and property.

Alite’s company, Straightened-Out Entertainment, facilitated the illegal lending scheme, reportedly netting him $75,000. Prosecutors have outlined these accusations, emphasizing the need for law-abiding business practices.

New Jersey’s attorney general, Jennifer Davenport, emphasized the state’s commitment to fair business conduct. She expressed determination in holding those accountable who engage in deceitful practices. Alite’s case involves multiple victims and serious charges, including extortion and threats of violence.
