A Florida driver, accused of fleeing a traffic stop, collided head-on with a school bus carrying 19 children. The incident occurred on a Tuesday morning and was documented through video footage. This footage captures the car crash into the Sumter County school bus and includes police body camera video showing a deputy pursuing and arresting the suspect.
Fortunately, none of the 19 children aboard the bus sustained injuries, confirmed by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect, Qahiem Williams, aged 23, faces several charges, having allegedly fled a traffic stop and subsequently crashed into the bus.
The sequence of events began at approximately 7:20 a.m. when a deputy was conducting school-zone traffic enforcement near The Villages Intermediate Center. The deputy observed Williams supposedly driving 17 mph over the posted speed limit on County Road 466.
The sheriff’s office reported that the deputy attempted a U-turn and activated emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop. Williams, however, allegedly accelerated and sideswiped two vehicles at a traffic light.
Authorities stated that these collisions damaged Williams’ vehicle axle, resulting in a head-on collision with a Sumter County school bus on County Road 103. Video footage from inside the bus depicts the collision, with the driver’s side door of Williams’ vehicle appearing to open moments before the impact.
After the collision, Williams allegedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Police body camera video captures a deputy pursuing Williams, eventually apprehending him near a Walmart.
Williams faces numerous charges, such as fleeing or eluding, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, hit-and-run, and a moving traffic violation. Additionally, he had two outstanding Sumter County warrants related to fleeing or eluding and driving with a suspended license.
Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden expressed strong disapproval of the alleged actions, underscoring the dangers posed to children’s lives.
“I have zero tolerance when it comes to actions that put our children’s lives in danger,” Breeden remarked.
He further added, “This suspect has a history of this type of behavior and our community is safer with him off our streets.”
Williams was medically cleared before being transported to the Sumter County Detention Center, where authorities reported that he is being held without bond.
