FIFA Cancels Plan to Sell World Cup Stakes to Private Investors

The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, announced the cancellation of a plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private equity investors. This plan aimed to consolidate FIFA’s commercial and event operations into a commercial subsidiary valued at $20 billion.

Opposition to the plan came from soccer bodies in Asia, Europe, and North America. Europe’s soccer organization expressed its refusal to participate in FIFA competitions linked to this proposal. FIFA initially defended its position by stating that “nobody is selling football.” Later, Infantino clarified that the goal was to strengthen soccer organizations, not cause division.

“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions that are no longer in the interest of the initial objective,” Infantino stated. “Our purpose has always been — and will always be — to unite and improve.”

The plan, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, resulted in the resignation of Carlos Cordeiro, a former Goldman Sachs banker and Infantino’s senior advisor. Cordeiro disagreed with selling a stake in the World Cup.

The move would have led to a $20 million payment to each FIFA member federation. However, CONCACAF, representing North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, rejected the plan.

Infantino expressed his intent to reunite all parties with shared interests in football, particularly in countries needing support. He emphasized the commitment to enhance and grow the sport globally.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino participated in the award ceremony of the 2026 World Cup final at the New York/New Jersey Stadium.
