The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I risk warning for a series of recalled blueberry and mixed berry products due to potential E. coli contamination. This classification indicates a serious health threat. The affected products were GreenWise items sold at Publix stores, including:
- Organic Whole Blueberries – 10 oz – UPC number: 41415-06453
- Organic Whole Blueberries – 48 oz – UPC number: 41415-12053
- Organic Whole Mixed Berries – 10 oz – UPC number: 41415-06753
- Organic Whole Mixed Berries – 48 oz – UPC number: 41415-12153
A Class I risk classification represents a situation where exposure to the product could result in severe health consequences or death. Publix recalled all lots of these products on July 29 due to potential contamination with E. coli O145, a harmful bacterium that can cause intense stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.
The berries, sent to Publix locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, have been associated with 12 reported illnesses as of July 30. Four hospitalizations were noted, though no deaths have occurred. The FDA’s investigation is ongoing, with illnesses reported from May 11 to June 5.
Understanding E. Coli
E. coli, short for Escherichia coli, comprises a broad group of bacteria often found in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains are benign and aid digestion, some, like E. coli O145, are dangerous. The FDA describes this strain as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), which can severely damage the intestinal lining and possibly lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome. This serious condition can result in kidney failure.
E. coli can contaminate the food supply through contact with fecal matter. Human and animal carriers can spread the bacteria via contaminated crops, insufficiently cooked meat, unpasteurized dairy products, or poor hygiene practices. While anyone can be affected, children under 5, seniors over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of suffering severe symptoms.
Recall Amid Broader Foodborne Illness Concerns
This berry recall coincides with wider concerns about foodborne diseases. A new study endorsed by the World Health Organization estimates that invasive foodborne parasites caused around 171 million illnesses globally from 2000 to 2021. The study assessed 14 parasitic diseases, linking them to nearly 4.89 million disability-adjusted life years, a metric combining years of life lost and years lived with disability. Findings highlighted ongoing suffering from foodborne parasites despite a general decline in their impact.
Although E. coli is not a parasite and the recalls are unrelated to the study’s findings, both cases highlight the risk when harmful organisms enter our food supply. These situations emphasize the need for continuous surveillance, stringent sanitation practices, and quick response to outbreaks.
