Junior pitcher Jonathan Niksich of South Elgin has transformed his gameplay this season. Initially facing a tough start, Niksich chose to simplify his approach: “Just play the game.” This shift proved vital as he played a key role in a highly anticipated match against rival Bartlett.
With the Upstate Eight Conference title on the line, the game between South Elgin and Bartlett ended in a rare occurrence. After 14 innings, darkness forced the suspension of play with neither side scoring. Niksich stepped up in relief for ace Zacharia Barkho, who delivered an impressive eight innings before reaching his pitch limit.
Niksich sustained the team’s strong performance by pitching six innings, striking out 11, allowing only two hits, and conceding two walks. Barkho, too, had an outstanding game with 13 strikeouts, two hits given up, and a single walk. Alex Muro contributed offensively with two hits.
Bartlett countered with a formidable pitching display as Brandon Pelz, Aiden Mertes, and Joe Kennedy combined for 14 shutout innings. They amassed 12 strikeouts alongside dispersing five hits and giving up three walks. Josh Colaizzi and Mason Leiterman managed singles and doubles.
Despite the pitching excellence, only Barkho reached third base. Niksich appreciated Barkho’s enthusiasm, especially considering it was Barkho’s final high school game against Bartlett. “I just knew I was going to have his back,” Niksich said, reflecting on the shared energy and drive between them. Coach David Palmer praised Niksich’s performance, stating, “Johnny was unbelievable.”
Both Barkho and Bartlett’s Pelz delivered high-energy performances, with Barkho embracing the rivalry. “I love playing Bartlett,” he mentioned, enjoying the competitive tension throughout the game.
Pelz equaled Barkho’s effort over six innings, maintaining a gripping contest. Bartlett coach Alex Coan expressed confidence in Pelz during crucial moments, appreciating the fierce competition. “Two of the best pitchers in our conference,” Coan noted.
Palmer admired Niksich and Barkho’s synergy from his perspective in the dugout: “You can’t beat it.” He emphasized the tactical importance of securing early runs amidst challenging conditions.
Niksich’s readiness was evident when called upon mid-game, acknowledging his preparation and maintaining composure. Palmer lauded Niksich’s rapid development and assertive gameplay: “He dominates. He trusts himself and his defense.”
