Ed Orgeron Returns to LSU, Joins Lane Kiffin’s Staff

After a six-year run as head coach and leading the Tigers to a national championship in 2019, Ed Orgeron is making his return to LSU. He joins Lane Kiffin’s staff, creating a buzz along the Bayou. College football often surprises with intriguing coaching moves, and this development is no different.

Ed Orgeron has spent recent years outside the game, bringing laughter and memorable moments. After his departure from LSU in 2021, orchestrated by former athletic director Scott Woodward, he received a substantial $17.1 million buyout.

Now appointed as ‘special assistant to recruiting and defense’ under Kiffin, Orgeron’s new role will enable him to engage in recruiting activities, thanks to recent NCAA rule changes. “I’m thrilled to welcome Coach Orgeron back to LSU,” Kiffin stated. “His national recruiting prowess and understanding of Louisiana’s talent pool bring tremendous value. I’m eager to see his impact on recruits and defensive players.”

College athletics evolve, and now money can legally flow to players, changing the game’s dynamics. “It’s a small adjustment,” Orgeron remarked humorously, “We used to do it discreetly, but now it’s front and center,” he shared on Bussin’ With The Boys.

Orgeron and Kiffin’s connection isn’t new. In 2009, Kiffin brought Orgeron from the NFL to Tennessee. When Kiffin moved to USC, Orgeron joined him. Reflecting on those times, Orgeron stated, “Kiffin was a promising coach, a fantastic recruiter. Working at USC was an opportunity I valued, though Tennessee was also tremendous for recruiting.”

The duo competed against each other in 2020 at Ole Miss and LSU. Their reunion brings anticipation to LSU, along with former colleague Tee Martin, also joining Kiffin’s staff. Their past collaborations often involved drama and success, from Tennessee to USC.

Orgeron’s recruiting skills and defensive expertise are valuable assets. His presence adds another dynamic layer to LSU’s coaching strategy. Lane Kiffin’s bold decision to hire such a controversial figure as Orgeron further enhances the excitement surrounding the Tigers.

This period will surely keep LSU football in the spotlight. How it unfolds remains to be seen, but it’s expected to be an animated time in Baton Rouge.
