Fauci’s diary entry from January 26, 2020, dealt with the virus’s connection to a Chinese market. He noted:
“It appears the first infection in early December wasn’t linked to the market. Infections spread among people weeks before the Chinese acknowledged this new infection.”
Publicly, Fauci later stated to USA Today:
“A bat likely infected an intermediary host, which then infected a human. The market amplified the existing spread rather than originating it.”
Fauci’s diaries also mention collaborating with scientists on COVID-19 origins, considering a lab leak theory, yet leading scientists support a natural emergence theory. This stance remains consistent in many scientific circles.
Fauci’s Interactions with President Trump
Fauci often documented his experiences with President Trump. In a March 11, 2020 entry, he described presenting to the president, who showed more concern for public health over the economy.
An August 4, 2020 entry noted a tense White House meeting where Trump was frustrated over rising case numbers, attributing it to increased testing. Fauci explained to Trump that increased positives and hospitalizations are true indicators of more cases, not just testing.
Media and Public Attention
Fauci also detailed his growing public profile in the diary. On May 13, 2020, he recounted a conversation with actress Julia Roberts, where she praised him as her hero. Their discussion highlighted the threat of COVID-19 in developing countries and the importance of vaccine trials there.
Trump’s COVID-19 Illness
Fauci documented President Trump’s battle with COVID-19. In an October 4, 2020 entry, he noted a call from Mark Meadows, then Chief of Staff, about Trump’s condition. Fauci advised following CDC guidelines of 10 days from symptom onset for public appearances. Trump’s symptoms began on October 1, making October 10 a safe return date. He recorded Trump’s fever and oxygen levels, which led to treatment with Remdesivir.
