Released by Senator Rand Paul, these entries offer insights into Fauci’s role and relationships during the crisis, illustrating his close ties with certain media personalities.
In these diary entries, CNN anchor Jake Tapper was prominently featured, with Fauci mentioning Tapper 41 times. The entries reveal exchanges between Tapper and Fauci, including text messages in which Tapper mocked rival news hosts and other medical professionals. On April 13, 2020, Fauci noted Tapper’s concern after an appearance that angered Trump supporters, stating, “Jake wanted to make sure the interview did not cause me any problems.” By July 2020, Fauci described having dinner with Tapper, indicating a growing friendship.
Fauci also recounted the guidance he provided Tapper for interviewing pediatrician Brett Giroir on CNN’s “State of the Union.” However, Tapper later expressed frustration about the situation in an early morning call to Fauci. Despite the agitation, Fauci later invited Tapper to dinner at his home, implying their bond remained strong.
The entries continued with CNN’s Dana Bash appearing in April 2021, sending Fauci a supportive text after a tough House Select Subcommittee hearing. Bash praised Fauci’s handling of the situation involving Representative Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, as did her colleague, Wolf Blitzer.
Another media figure, Andrea Mitchell, reached out to Fauci on July 4, 2020, apologizing for issues with scheduling him on her show. She expressed surprise at concerns over Fauci’s TV appearances, as he believed the White House was limiting his exposure.
Fauci also communicated with NBC’s Chuck Todd, discussing the strategy behind publicly defending himself against attacks. Their conversation covered media tactics and the importance of managing media narratives.
Interactions with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos were noted following an interview on “Good Morning America.” Stephanopoulos complimented Fauci’s dismissive response to a disparaging tweet from then-President Trump.
Fauci further detailed his collaboration with CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jonathan LaPook, providing preparation support for LaPook’s TV segments about vaccines.
