Alabama residents are rallying to support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library through a new specialty license plate. This initiative follows the death of the country musician at age 80. Parton’s legacy extends beyond her music, with significant contributions to philanthropy.
Rising Support for the Imagination Library
Kaelyn Christian, the state director for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Alabama, reported a rapid increase in pre-commitments for the license plate. Starting the week with about 40, commitments soared to over 550, nearing the goal of 1,000 required for production.
Each license plate purchased will direct approximately $50 to the Imagination Library program within the buyer’s county. This annual payment supports ongoing contributions to local programs, effectively functioning as a recurring donation.
Origin and Impact of the Imagination Library
Dolly Parton established the Imagination Library in 1995 to encourage reading among children by providing free books from birth to age 5. The program honors her father, who lacked opportunities to read or write. To date, over 300 million books have been distributed globally.
Currently, around 114,000 children in Alabama participate, with a significant uptick in registrations recently noted. The funds from one license plate can supply books to two children monthly for almost two years.
Long-Lasting Benefits for Families
Beyond numbers, Parton’s legacy fosters excitement among children eagerly awaiting new monthly books. Christian shared examples of families benefiting from the program. For instance, one mother planned to commit to the license plate as her children were graduating from the library to ensure others could enjoy the same experience.
Christian also described the impact on families unable to afford books. One family noted their middle schooler now reads 200 books a year thanks to the Imagination Library involvement.
Ensuring Long-Term Support
The specialty plate provides more than a tribute; it promises fiscal security for local programs. These partners play a crucial role by enrolling children, promoting the initiative, and securing additional funding.
Alabama’s statewide expansion of the Imagination Library, confirmed by Governor Kay Ivey, now includes all 67 counties. This expansion, aided by state financial support covering 50% of costs for participating children, ensures comprehensive program reach.
