Dieffenbach Leads UCLA to Victory Over Wisconsin

UCLA quarterback Ty Dieffenbach delivered an impressive performance in his first start, leading his team to a 17-7 victory over Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl. Following Nico Iamaleava’s injury, Dieffenbach stepped up, passing for 264 yards as UCLA maintained its unbeaten status in the Big Ten.

The game saw UCLA’s defense play a pivotal role. They prevented a Wisconsin comeback by stopping the Badgers in a crucial fourth-and-two situation. While UCLA succeeded in converting 13 third downs, they were penalized eight times, accumulating 78 yards.

In the fourth quarter, Dieffenbach orchestrated a decisive six-play, 89-yard drive, solidifying UCLA’s bowl eligibility with their 6-0 record under coach Bob Chesney. Despite UCLA’s reputation for a strong rushing attack, the Badgers’ defense held UCLA to 3.2 yards per carry.

Heisman Trophy candidate Wayne Knight experienced a tough game. He achieved only 29 all-purpose yards, though he recorded his 12th touchdown of the season. With UCLA challenged at the line of scrimmage, Dieffenbach became essential in leading the team.

Dieffenbach’s performance was commendable, completing 22 of 33 passes. He came close to matching Iamaleava’s career-best game by just 12 yards. His efforts were crucial in UCLA’s first touchdown during the second quarter after a successful 21-yard pass to Jalen Saint Paul.

The Bruins’ second touchdown came after an impressive drive from the UCLA 11. Dieffenbach connected with passes of 28 and 33 yards, leading to Anthony Woods scoring on a three-yard run.

On defense, UCLA stood firm, holding Wisconsin to 214 total yards. The Bruins excelled in coverage, allowing only 66 passing yards, despite playing without starting cornerback Rodrick Pleasant.

Wisconsin’s quarterback, Colton Joseph, provided the Badgers’ only touchdown, rushing for 71 yards. However, UCLA’s defense consistently made key stops, ensuring control of the game.

Even as UCLA failed to secure a turnover for the first time this season, they disrupted key plays. A significant moment came when linebacker Jalen Woods sacked Joseph, leading to an unsuccessful field-goal attempt for Wisconsin.

The Bruins concluded their defensive stronghold by stopping Wisconsin on a crucial drive in the fourth quarter. This stop nearly ended the Badgers’ hopes of a comeback, sealing UCLA’s victory.
