Detroit Lions Lock in Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs with Lucrative Deal

The past week has been significant for NFL running backs, marked by a series of lucrative contracts. Among these, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs secured a standout agreement. On Thursday evening, Gibbs concluded a three-year contract valued at $67.5 million, including $51.5 million in guaranteed money. The announcement was made by Gibbs’ agent, Todd France, on Instagram.

This deal positions Gibbs as the top earner in the NFL for running backs, with an impressive annual average of $22.5 million. His role as a playmaker has reached unprecedented heights in Detroit, reminiscent of Barry Sanders’ impact in the 1990s. Gibbs has recorded 39 rushing touchdowns and an additional 10 receiving touchdowns over his first three seasons. In 2024, he led the NFL with 20 total touchdowns from scrimmage.

Another major contract was finalized earlier, as Jonathan Taylor signed a two-year extension with the Indianapolis Colts, averaging $22 million annually. Days before, Bijan Robinson struck a deal with the Atlanta Falcons for $22.25 million per year. These contracts surpass Saquon Barkley’s benchmark contract, which averaged $20.6 million annually since the 2025 offseason.

For the Detroit Lions, the Gibbs contract reflects a commitment to retaining top talent drafted by the team. They have extended key players like Aidan Hutchinson, Jack Campbell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, Jameson Williams, Alim McNeill, and Kerby Joseph. This investment in talent led to winning the NFC North in 2023, ending a 32-year playoff win drought, and reaching the NFC championship game. In 2024, the team set a franchise record with 15 wins and made the playoffs again last year.

Despite these successes, the Lions have yet to secure a Super Bowl appearance or victory. The talent acquired through strategic drafts and development is now demanding a significant financial commitment. The total contracts for these picks amount to over $800 million, with Gibbs’ deal included. Expectations are high for the Lions to achieve a Super Bowl championship, given the extensive investments.
