Darline Graham Nordone has been chosen to complete the Senate term of her late brother, Lindsey Graham, following his sudden passing over the weekend. Although Nordone has no prior experience in political office, she has been an integral part of her brother’s life and career. Her involvement spans attending his speeches, participating in campaign ads, and being present at political events.
Nordone’s connection to her brother extends beyond politics. After their parents passed away when she was 13 and Graham was 22, he became her legal guardian. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Nordone to serve until January, with the responsibility of continuing Graham’s legacy. A special primary will soon decide which Republican candidate will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the upcoming general election.
Graham’s Role as Guardian
Graham, while attending law school, faced the responsibility of becoming the guardian for his sister after they lost both parents. Their mother succumbed to Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1976, and fifteen months later, their father died from a heart attack while Graham was at law school. Taking on this responsibility, Graham ensured his sister’s wellbeing became his priority.
Nordine recounted a pivotal moment, “I can remember the day my father passed away, standing in the living room of that house, absolutely scared to death,” she shared with NPR in 2015. “Lindsey wrapped his arms around me and promised me he would always be there for me and always take care of me.” Graham’s decision to become her legal guardian and later adopt her, ensuring she received his military benefits, highlighted his commitment.
The Enduring Bond
Graham never married or had children, but he maintained a close bond with his sister. When filing for his candidacy in March, Nordone and her family accompanied him, illustrating their shared life journey. Graham emphasized this relationship, stating, “I take nothing for granted. I count every blessing, every day.”
Nordone, who later married and had children and grandchildren of her own, worked in supporting disabled people. In a C-SPAN interview, Graham praised his sister’s accomplishments as the highlight of his life.
Bob McAlister, a former consultant, noted the deep bond between the siblings forged through their challenging childhood. “He grew up with nothing,” McAlister shared. “The way he and Darline grew up just had an indelible impact on him.” McAlister added that Graham’s character and drive were deeply rooted in their shared history.
Political Influence
Graham often referenced their background during campaign events, with Nordone frequently by his side. In a 2014 campaign ad for his third Senate term, Nordone voiced the security her brother provided after their parents’ deaths, stating, “He never let me down. Never.”
Shortly before Nordone’s appointment, President Donald Trump publicly supported her selection, calling it a “fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!”
