On Wednesday, two individuals ascended to the top of the Empire State Building’s antenna, unfurling a banner emphasizing ‘the power of love’ before being arrested. The pair, clad in black attire and masks, managed a precarious balance on a narrow ledge without visible safety tethers. News helicopters captured images of them kissing at this dizzying height, 1,454 feet above midtown Manhattan.
The banner waved in the breeze, proclaiming, ‘when the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.’ Shortly after 12:30 p.m., they started their descent, carefully navigating the latticework to a broader ledge. Here, one set up an electronic device and knelt down, engaging in an affectionate moment with the other. The scene unfolded with selfies being snapped, the outstretched hand suggesting a ring inspection.
From the streets below, onlookers were captivated by this unusual display atop the iconic Art Deco skyscraper. Jonathan Roman, a tourist from Glasgow, observed, ‘It’s crazy—like being in the movies,’ although access to the building was restricted due to the spectacle. He and his son, aiming to visit the observation deck, instead watched from afar, finding the event perhaps even more engaging.
Within the building, employees pondered how these daredevils bypassed security protocols designed to prevent unauthorized access to such areas. Jessica Kaplan, a worker in the building, expressed her surprise at their apparent ease in reaching such a high-profile spot.
Police detained the individuals shortly after 1 p.m., though their identities remain undisclosed. Fortunately, no injuries occurred during the incident. How they accessed the antenna, far above the public zones of the 102-story structure, remains a mystery.
This daring climb is not unprecedented. While most such ventures are unauthorized, the building has seen similar exploits, notably by actor and musician Jared Leto, who ascended to the base of the antenna from the 86th floor in 2023 for promotional purposes.
The building’s management has yet to comment on this unique event.
