Danny Moscoso’s Impactful Transition to Football at South Elgin

Danny Moscoso, a senior kicker for South Elgin, thrives under pressure situations. Known primarily as the goalkeeper for the Storm’s boys soccer team, Moscoso transitioned to football, adding kicking to his skill set. Over the summer, he embraced this new challenge.

When asked if he had been in such a high-stakes football situation, Moscoso replied, “In this sport, no, but in soccer, yes.” His experience in dealing with tense moments during crucial soccer matches prepared him for what was to come. “I’m used to pressure,” he noted.

On Friday, Moscoso faced a unique scenario at the close of the game against West Aurora. With the Upstate Eight West title at stake, he successfully kicked a 32-yard field goal with mere seconds left, clinching a 29-27 victory for South Elgin. This marked his first field goal in a game situation.

South Elgin’s offensive efforts included touchdown passes by Oliver Johnston and Carter McDonald. Lamari Smith contributed significantly with 158 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. The defense made key plays too, with Diesel Fecarotta blocking a punt and scoring a touchdown by recovering it in the end zone. Semaj Collier caught nine passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Despite trailing, West Aurora’s Tyler Fecht managed to complete five passes, including touchdown throws to Richard Bell Jr. and Brendon Salach. Fecht also secured an 11-yard touchdown reception from Bell on a trick play. Michael Williams added 81 rushing yards and a touchdown for West Aurora.

South Elgin’s coaching staff faced a strategic decision at a critical moment. They considered pursuing a touchdown or having Jeffrey Espana attempt the field goal. Ultimately, they entrusted Moscoso with the responsibility. Coach Pat Pistorio remarked on Moscoso’s impressive practice performance and mental readiness. “He’s a competitor. In soccer, he gets after it,” Pistorio observed.

In the final minutes, South Elgin relinquished a two-touchdown advantage. However, McDonald connected with Collier for a 23-yard touchdown. Opting for a two-point conversion and the win, the team fell short. After recovering the onside kick, they had another chance.

Faced with a fourth-and-7 from the Blackhawks’ 16-yard line, McDonald swiftly transitioned from quarterback to holder. Describing the moment, McDonald said, “The snap was a little high, so I just had to get it down for the team.” He allowed Moscoso to focus on his task uninterrupted.

Moscoso’s preparation began in July during football camp. “You just have to be ready at all times,” he said. When the opportunity arose, he aimed to perform at his best despite nerves. “I hoped I would get the chance,” Moscoso added.

His teammates have consistently supported him, reinforcing their belief in his skills. “They were grateful I had this opportunity and I made this game-winning kick,” Moscoso acknowledged.

As a thrilling event concluded, South Elgin found themselves one victory away from securing the conference title. “That was a great game,” Pistorio stated. “I’m excited to see our program grow. This is why we do this.”
