Dan J. Sullivan Jr., an Alaska Senate candidate sharing the name with incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, has advanced to the general election, as announced by The Associated Press. Joining Sen. Sullivan and former Rep. Mary Peltola, Sullivan Jr. is among the final candidates in the race. The fourth candidate has not yet been revealed.
The progression of Sullivan Jr., following last Tuesday’s polls, presents challenges for Republicans, who must clarify the candidates’ names and voting instructions. The complexity increases with the ranked-choice voting (RCV) system used in the general election. RCV requires voters to rank candidates by preference. If a top choice is eliminated, votes move to the next choice, expanding voter influence but also leading to voter confusion, as noted by Sen. Sullivan.
“This new election system has created unnecessary confusion,” Sen. Sullivan expressed to local media in 2024, referencing the ranked-choice voting system introduced in 2020.
Sullivan Jr.’s candidacy has heightened concerns due to the shared name. Running as an independent in a field of 16, he secured 2.5% of the vote without specifying a political affiliation or position, focusing instead on defeating incumbent Sullivan. His campaign reads, “Dan Sullivan challenges Dan Sullivan for U.S. Senate Seat, urging Alaskans to elect a Sullivan who stands up for Alaska.”
Questions arose when Fox News Digital found Amber Lee, progressive consultant and former Peltola supporter, involved in Sullivan Jr.’s campaign materials, leading to Republican skepticism about intentional vote splitting.
Alaska state Sen. James Kaufman expressed concern about potential voter confusion, noting the traditionalist stance of some residents opposed to RCV. Kaufman cited “ballot fatigue,” where voters avoid ranking due to disagreement with the system.
“Some voters still prefer one person, one vote,” Kaufman stated, emphasizing the resistance among certain Alaskans.
With the primary completed, Sen. Sullivan, Sullivan Jr., and Peltola will compete in the general election on November 3.
