A couple planning to relocate from California encountered significant challenges when their moving company allegedly doubled the price originally quoted. John Nelson and his wife were moving from Oceanside to North Carolina and have shared their distressing experience with CBS 8.
The couple initially agreed to a contract with a moving broker for a full-service move at just over $16,000. They paid a $7,000 deposit upfront. However, on the day of the move, the company reportedly increased the cost to $32,000, claiming the couple had more belongings than estimated.
Escalating Fees
Despite his frustration, Nelson agreed to the higher charge to avoid losing the deposit. He later asserted that the company attempted to impose further fees upon delivery. According to their account, the contractor aimed to deliver their items on June 3, a week prior to the date they had specified. This earlier delivery failed, and they were charged an additional redelivery fee.
Holding Belongings Hostage
“They’ve got $30,000 and our belongings, and they’re holding them for ransom,” Nelson stated. He expressed disbelief, noting that moving is usually a positive event, but it became a source of stress due to the situation.
Suspicion over Delivery Attempt
Nelson suspected the initial delivery attempt was staged. He alleged that the truck shown in the video was not the same vehicle used for loading. “I think they just pulled up an empty truck to stage a charade,” he commented.
The couple filed police reports in Oceanside and their new city in North Carolina. They also lodged complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). CBS 8 reported that the broker has received 280 complaints over the past three years with the BBB. The broker disputed Nelson’s claims but indicated efforts to resolve the issue.
