The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool’s rehabilitation project has come under scrutiny as President Donald Trump announced that six individuals have been arrested related to recent damage. This $14-million-plus project has become a contentious issue involving law enforcement, aesthetics, and environmental concerns as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary celebrations.
Trump alleged, without evidence, that a “350-foot gash” was present in the paint, insisting on a deadline to complete the renovation before the upcoming celebrations. He promised to release images to support this claim.
The president aimed to enhance the viewing pool by draining its water and painting the bottom “American flag blue.” However, post-restoration, the pool has suffered algae bloom, and the new coating has begun peeling. Trump continuously blames this issue on vandalism.
“It was purposefully and criminally done, and somebody had to work very hard, probably in the dark of night, to create such a condition,” Trump stated, claiming seven more individuals were cited for damage to the pool.
The U.S. Park Police and the Interior Department have not commented on the arrests or vandalism claims. The Associated Press confirmed that one person was arrested for touching peeling paint, stating curiosity about the new coating.
National Guard members and Park Police patrol the pool area due to Trump’s accusations of vandalized liner. Fencing was added around the pool as of late Tuesday.
Trump announced that the Interior Department will release images of the alleged vandalism. While landing in Pennsylvania, he assured reporters that photos and videos would be shared, though none were released by Tuesday afternoon.
The arrests verify heightened security anticipated for the 250th anniversary celebrations, expected to attract large crowds to the National Mall.
Trump mentioned part of the pool would be drained around July Fourth for repairs. Details regarding the scale, scope, or total costs of these repairs remain unclear.
Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a contractor involved in the project, identified some areas needing repair, clarifying that these do not signify the liner’s failure. Repair is expected post-drainage as per warranty.
Criticism intensifies as an environmental group urges U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to investigate after discovering a dead Mallard duckling in the algae-filled pool. The Center for Biological Diversity emphasized enforcing the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to protect migratory birds.
“Wasting taxpayer money turning the reflecting pool into a giant duck death trap just in time for America’s 250th birthday party is as Trump as it gets. Cruel, stupid and selfish,” stated Tara Zuardo of the Arizona-based group.
City Wildlife, a local rescue organization, reserved comment on the duckling’s cause of death due to the carcass being unretrieved for examination.
Trump initially presented the improvements as a means to clean and reinforce the site, describing it as neglected by previous leadership. Algae, plaguing the pool for a century, flourished in newly-installed “American flag blue” coating, casting a green tint over the water.
Within weeks of the project completion declaration, the pool experienced vibrant algae bloom, clouding the coating. Additional floating liner pieces were observed in the pool. Workers have been seen applying hydrogen peroxide to combat algae, although it can also act as a paint remover.
Experts indicate dark linings may contribute to algae growth by absorbing sunlight, increasing water temperature, and facilitating algae development.
