Controversial Hydration Breaks in the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Soccer traditionally involves two halves, not divided periods. However, FIFA introduced hydration breaks 22 minutes into each half for the 2026 World Cup. This change applies regardless of outdoor conditions or indoor venues.

Former ESPN president John Skipper criticized FIFA president Gianni Infantino, saying the breaks serve advertising purposes. On “Pablo Torre Finds Out,” Skipper argued that FOX utilized these breaks for commercials, not player hydration.

Sportico reported that FOX benefits financially, as highlighted on July 8. With a $485 million investment, FOX stands to profit significantly. Hydration breaks provide about 260 extra seconds for ads, leading to impressive earnings. During the group stages alone, FOX aimed for nearly $200 million and a projected $450 million by tournament’s end.

The last seven matches feature teams like Argentina, Belgium, and England. Viewership spikes as powerhouse teams compete. Notably, France faces Morocco again on July 9 in a highly anticipated rematch. Argentina seeks back-to-back titles with Lionel Messi.

The final takes place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium. Headlining the halftime show are BTS, Justin Bieber, Madonna, and Shakira. Additional performances include Burna Boy, Gustavo Dudamel, the PS22 Chorus, and Coldplay. The World Cup remains a lucrative event.
