Controversial Foul and ‘Karma’ Debate in Fever-Sky Game

In the recent Indiana Fever clash against the Chicago Sky, a heated moment unfolded as DiJonai Carrington of the Sky delivered a hard foul on Sophie Cunningham of the Fever. With just two minutes left in the first quarter of the Fever’s 90-86 win, Carrington’s aggressive play resulted in Cunningham’s bloodied mouth and Carrington’s ejection after the foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 2.

Sports Illustrated quickly published an article suggesting the foul was a result of ‘karma’ coming back to Cunningham, referencing her previous outspoken stance against transgender athletes in women’s sports. The initial title, “Sophie Cunningham Got a Bitter Taste of Karma After Drawing Flagrant Foul in Fever-Sky,” sparked intense reactions online. Many perceived this as an attempt by Sports Illustrated to editorialize the incident, linking it to Cunningham’s controversial opinions.

Kristen Wong, a breaking news writer, initially crafted the story with this title but later updated it to: “Sophie Cunningham’s Enforcer Role Gets Reversed Onto Her With Hard Foul in Fever-Sky.” The narrative hinted at a past incident during the 2025 WNBA season where Cunningham was ejected for committing a similar foul.

Cunningham herself acknowledged her past actions, stating, “Last year I did the same thing, and I got kicked out, as I deserved to be kicked out.” Her admission was overshadowed by Carrington’s social media post stating, “WHITE PRIVILEGE” and tagging the Fever, which Cunningham dismissed by saying, “this has nothing to do with race.”

Indiana’s head coach Stephanie White supported Carrington, suggesting the foul was not intentional and agreeing with the referee’s decision to call a flagrant. She praised Carrington’s competitive nature, saying, “Nobody’s gonna go walking in for a layup.” However, White declined to comment on the “white privilege” remark.

This situation places the WNBA in a predicament about how to address Carrington’s racial commentary amid the foul’s controversy.
