Former member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Jake Altman, shared concerns about the organization’s shift toward communist ideals. He suggests this trend is influencing the Democratic Party’s leftward movement.
Altman expressed alarm about the DSA’s internal resistance to anti-communism, even from its moderate members. He described this as dangerous. Speaking on ‘Saturday in America,’ he highlighted that the DSA is not a benign entity. He noted that they are open to aligning with various radical groups, including Maoists, Trotskyists, and Leninists, aiming to dismantle American institutions.
“People who want to pull down American institutions and are very clear about it. People who have this thrill to violence. That is just profoundly troubling at a time when our country is already facing many, many problems,” Altman stated.
This warning comes amidst visible support for Democratic socialist figures in New York, such as Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Brad Lander. Their national recognition underscores the organization’s influence.
Altman reflected on his experiences nearly a decade ago, questioning the organization’s direction during a debate. Back then, he was reassured that the radical path was driven by a small faction linked to ‘Jacobin’ magazine. He noted debates with Leninists who claimed figures like Bernie Sanders weren’t socialist enough. Such extremism, he said, is not isolated but is evident in the DSA’s leadership.
Altman called upon Democrats to counter the radicalized base of far-left DSA candidates gaining traction nationwide. He argued that these candidates do not engage in good faith with the Democratic Party. He warned they target moderate and progressive Democrats to achieve power.
