Concerns Arise Over Potential Serial Killer in Lansing, Michigan

Lansing, Michigan is currently on edge due to concerns about a possible serial killer targeting individuals along the Lansing River Trail. The Lansing Police Department has announced an investigation into whether five recent deaths might be linked to an attacker in the area.

Karen Holt, a criminology professor at Michigan State University, emphasizes the need for caution while staying rational. She notes the concerns related to the victims and the nature of the violence.

“As someone who studies violence, the first thing that came to mind was the victims, their vulnerability, and the method of the violence,” she stated.

The victims, according to the police, were all homeless. A criminal profiler has pointed out that such attacks reflect a pattern where offenders choose victims perceived as vulnerable and lacking credibility. This lowers the chance of the offender being caught.

Details of the Incidents

  • October 14, 2025: Gino Chouinard, 54, was found unconscious on the trail and later died. His cause of death is undetermined.
  • July 9, 2026: Denis Dunnebacke, 70, was found unresponsive under a bridge and died a week later. His cause of death remains unknown.
  • July 13, 2026: Robert Smith, 57, experienced severe head trauma and died shortly after. His death was ruled a blunt force homicide.
  • August 20, 2026: Daniel Lusk, 22, was fatally stabbed under a bridge. Edward Joseph Smith, 23, was arrested in connection with this incident.
  • August 30, 2026: Louis Woodruff, 57, was discovered with severe facial trauma and succumbed to his injuries. This death was ruled a blunt force homicide.

Edward Joseph Smith has only been linked to Lusk’s death, with no accusations in the other four cases. Police have not released any motive behind the murder.

Despite Smith’s arrest, concerns remain among residents. Holt mentions that the murder of Lusk stands out due to the stabbing, whereas others involved blunt force trauma.

Authorities in Lansing are urging residents to maintain vigilance. Holt advises the public to avoid the Lansing River Trail for their safety, suggesting choosing alternative routes.
