Recent studies highlight the significant impact of climate change on extreme fire weather in Spain and France. These conditions have fueled devastating wildfires and increased burning in Southern Europe over the past eight years.
Scientists from World Weather Attribution conducted a rapid analysis during ongoing fires. They found that human-induced climate change made the dry and hot conditions driving Spain’s fires 20 times more likely. The chance of extreme fire conditions in France doubled.
Over the past 26 years, warming has tripled the odds of severe fire risks in Spain and increased them by 40% in France, according to the same study. Remarkably, a separate study published in Scientific Reports revealed that Southern Europe’s weather now reaches extreme fire-prone levels more than twice as often as it did decades ago.
“The change in these fire weather conditions in Spain is really extremely strong,” said Friederike Otto of Imperial College London.
Spain recorded its hottest summer, coupled with an unusually wet January. This allowed plant growth before a severe drought, heightening wildfire fuel. Challenges like land abandonment further aggravated the situation. In France, regions like Bordeaux have dense pine groves that easily ignite.
World Weather Attribution, a collaborative group of scientists, examines extreme events to assess climate change’s role. Although their study wasn’t peer-reviewed initially, the methods used are credible, often appearing in peer-reviewed journals later.
“This study makes sense and provides numbers to confirm what fire scientists already knew,” said Jacob Bendix of Syracuse University.
Otto’s team quantified how burning fossil fuels has intensified fire risks. By comparing current fire weather to historical data, they calculated how much climate change has raised fire severity likelihood.
The journal Scientific Reports study noted Southern Europe now experiences around 25 extreme fire days annually, up from about 10 in previous decades. These conditions have intensified by about 50% than they were from 1981 to 2010.
Raúl Cordero of the University of Groningen explained that while better fire management techniques initially decreased fires and land burned, climate change has since reversed progress. “It doesn’t matter how many resources or how much money you have, you just cannot stop the propagation of a fire when the weather is so extreme,” he stated.
John Abatzaglou of the University of California Merced emphasized that climate change impacts are already felt, urging a halt in fossil fuel usage. “We need to stop burning fossil fuels,” Otto echoed.
