The Cleveland Guardians achieved an incredible feat against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night during Game 5 of the American League Division Series. Guardians pitchers set a nine-inning postseason record by striking out 21 White Sox batters. This dominant performance allowed Cleveland to recover from a 2-0 series deficit and secure a 2-0 victory, moving to the next round of the playoffs.
Williams Leads the Charge
Gavin Williams initiated this remarkable display by taking the mound for Cleveland. He demonstrated exceptional skill by striking out 12 of the 21 batters he faced. Williams managed 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, two walks, and hitting one batter. His strong performance built a solid foundation for the team’s success.

Ramirez’s Decisive Hit
Jose Ramirez further secured Cleveland’s victory by hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning. The pitch was remarkably low, at 8.88 inches off the ground, marking the lowest postseason home run since at least 2008 and Ramirez’s lowest in his career. Ramirez’s contribution to the game came after an otherwise challenging season for him.

Despite a .235 batting average, .320 on-base percentage, and .368 slugging percentage, all marking his lowest since 2015, Ramirez shined by going 5-for-12 in the final three games of the series, hitting two homers, a triple, and a double. This notable performance followed a slow start of 0-for-6.
Guardians’ Bullpen Excellence
After Williams delivered a strong starting performance, Cleveland’s bullpen maintained the momentum. Erik Sabrowski, Evan Gaddis, and Cade Smith collectively secured the final 10 outs, striking out nine additional batters. Sabrowski struck out the lone player he faced, while Gaddis and Smith each contributed by striking out eight more hitters.

White Sox’s Struggles
The White Sox faced significant challenges throughout the season, having the fifth-highest strikeout rate in the league. They struck out 24.1% of the time during the regular season, but this rate soared to 63.6% on Saturday night, highlighting their struggles against Cleveland.
Cleveland had the odds against them after losing the first two games of the series at home. However, by winning three consecutive elimination games, they shifted the trajectory and ousted the White Sox, thus denying Chicago’s chance to clinch the series at home for the first time since 1906.
Next Steps for Guardians
With this victory, the Guardians advance to the American League Championship Series, facing the Tampa Bay Rays. This marks Cleveland’s second trip to this round in the last three years. The Rays recently ended the New York Yankees’ playoff run with a sweep, setting up a promising matchup in the upcoming series.
The ALCS is set to begin on Monday in Florida. The winner will proceed to the World Series to compete against the victor between the Los Angeles Dodgers, who aim for a threepeat, or the Milwaukee Brewers, who attempt to dethrone the reigning champions.
