Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of “The Odyssey” achieved an impressive debut at the box office, earning an estimated $124.5 million in domestic ticket sales and $139.6 million from international markets. This opening surpasses the success of his previous film “Oppenheimer” and marks Nolan’s best opening weekend since 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises.”
Nolan has once again demonstrated his unique ability to draw audiences with a grand-scale cinematic release. “The Odyssey,” a lavish adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, stands out amidst a landscape dominated by intellectual property-driven hits in Hollywood. With a substantial production budget of $250 million, it ranks among the most expensive R-rated films ever made. Universal Pictures supported the film with a $125 million marketing campaign.
The anticipation for “The Odyssey” was evident as IMAX introduced tickets for 70 mm showtimes a year before its release. To meet the demand, theaters even offered midnight and 3 a.m. screenings, quickly selling out. As Nolan’s first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, this format was pivotal in its success, contributing $29.6 million domestically and $51.8 million globally in ticket sales. IMAX committed its screens to the film for three weeks, achieving the company’s most successful weekend on record. Only 41 screens worldwide can project “The Odyssey” in 70 mm, yet these showings generated $6.3 million in ticket sales.
Since the pandemic, Nolan has played a crucial role in reviving theaters. His earlier release, “Tenet,” was one of the first major films to screen in 2020. More recently, “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” combined for significant cinematic impact. “Oppenheimer” grossed $975 million worldwide. “The Odyssey” arrives during Hollywood’s most robust summer since 2019, with ticket sales up by about 10% compared to last year, as reported by Rentrak. The industry anticipates its first $10 billion domestic box office year since the pandemic.
“The Odyssey” faced no competition from new releases during its opening weekend. The momentum appears to continue, as IMAX noted remarkable presales for the second weekend, placing them among the top ten. The film’s first challenge will come on July 31 with the release of Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya.
The star-studded cast of “The Odyssey” includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and Charlize Theron as Calypso. Nolan’s casting choices, such as Lupita Nyong’o as Helen and Elliot Page as a soldier, sparked controversy among some conservative critics. Elon Musk criticized Nolan over Nyong’o’s casting. However, this controversy had minimal impact on the film’s success.
The film has received acclaim from critics, maintaining a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences rated it favorably with an “A” CinemaScore, cementing its status as one of the year’s major cinematic events.
