While taking a walk in Austin, Texas, earlier this year, Jasper Steinmetz noticed a man with an Indiana University athletic backpack. Since Steinmetz had recently graduated from Indiana, he felt a connection and approached the man to talk.
The man was Sampson James, originally from Indiana. He had experienced homelessness for eight months. Through their conversation, Steinmetz found out that James was once a highly accomplished athlete. James had been a four-star football recruit from Avon High School, Indiana. He joined Indiana University’s football team as a freshman running back in 2019. Later, he transferred to Purdue in 2021 before returning as a walk-on player to Indiana University in 2023.
James’s ambitions in football were thwarted. A severe knee injury and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder significantly impacted his life. By 2023, he had left Indiana University without completing his degree, holding onto his red school backpack as one of his few belongings.
Their shared background quickly formed a bond, prompting Steinmetz to help. In June, he launched an online campaign for James. The fundraiser successfully collected $17,000. With these funds, Steinmetz secured an apartment for James, covering rent and additional essentials.
Now, when James and Steinmetz revisit the same path where their lives intersected, the outlook is positive. Many who contributed to James’s cause wish to see his progress. James emphasizes his commitment to not disappointing them, stating, “I’m big on not letting them down.”
