Challenging Ultimate Reality in Physics: Carlo Rovelli’s Perspective

Carlo Rovelli, a physicist renowned for his work and popular science writings, introduces a provocative stance in his latest book, On the Equality of All Things. Rovelli challenges the traditional pursuit of ultimate reality in physics, asserting that this quest is misguided.

Rovelli begins by emphasizing the limitations of human experience. Our perception of solid objects and fixed locations stems from living on a planet’s surface, yet modern physics shows these assumptions are illusions. Einstein’s relativity establishes that time and space measurements are relative, while quantum mechanics indicates that properties of matter are intertwined with measurement.

Rovelli’s argument is that physics does not offer a God’s-eye view of the universe. Instead, it provides a perspective from within.

He focuses on the relational interpretation of quantum mechanics, which posits that everything exists in relation to other things. According to Rovelli, properties are relational, and no absolute perspective exists. This erodes the idea that physics can ultimately explain everything.

In Rovelli’s view, proclaiming physics can exhaustively explain the world is erroneous. He disputes scientific triumphalism found in popular science books and clashes with many contemporary philosophers of science.

Drawing on philosophies from beyond the Western tradition, Rovelli integrates Indian and Asian perspectives, including thinkers like Nagarjuna and Zhuangzi, recognizing their contributions as comparable to Western philosophers like Plato and Aristotle.

Rovelli fiercely defends the value of physics and science, not as paths to absolute certainty, but as a creative quest for knowledge. Science, according to Rovelli, produces insight that is both beautiful and practical.

Despite potential disagreements, such as Rovelli’s oversight of experience’s primacy, the book invites discussion on understanding ourselves and our universe differently. Rovelli’s work encourages humility in light of the universe’s intricacies.
