Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s struggles seem to be ongoing. His journey began as the 10th overall pick in 2024, but his rookie season was disrupted by a torn meniscus. During his absence, Sam Darnold revived his career, leading the team to a 14-3 regular season record.
In 2025, McCarthy was expected to take the lead but faced setbacks as the team fell to a 9-8 record, missing the playoffs. A high ankle sprain limited his play, and his performance was underwhelming. Although the team won six out of ten games he started, his statistics showed 11 touchdowns paired with 12 interceptions.
Entering the 2026 season, the Vikings brought in Heisman Trophy winner and former top pick Kyler Murray, who quickly secured the starting position over McCarthy. Concerns now arise as Alec Lewis from The Athletic reports that McCarthy may lose even the backup position.
“As for the backup situation, McCarthy took all of the No. 2 reps in last week’s joint practices,” wrote Lewis. “His performance was up and down. Another chaotic preseason outing for McCarthy could position Carson Wentz as the most logical second option if Murray were to suffer an injury.”
Wentz, drafted second overall in 2016, has moved through multiple teams after being injured in 2017. His stops include Indianapolis, Washington, Los Angeles, and Kansas City.
Should McCarthy fail to secure the backup role, he might need to consider joining a new team for playing opportunities. Reports suggest that the Vikings may be shifting away from McCarthy during training camp.
Lewis highlights this change in strategy: “Expect the Vikings to play more from the shotgun in 2026. Furthermore, Minnesota’s staff plans to reconfigure the passing game around Murray’s strengths. These modifications matter for a franchise that has not won a playoff game since 2019.”
