A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agriculture detector dog recently uncovered nearly 100 pounds of prohibited goods in luggage arriving from Thailand. The discovery was made after the dog, named Maisy, alerted officers to the suspicious suitcase, as reported by authorities.
Within the luggage, officers found 50 pounds of meat, including raw items, along with 33 pounds of mangoes, garlic, bamboo, banana plants, and about 16 pounds of Bengal monitor lizard. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has taken custody of the monitor lizard.
In a separate event, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, in coordination with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, inspected a vehicle at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. They discovered approximately 436 fish, which included species such as rockfish, lingcod, sheephead, and yellowtail.
The three individuals in the vehicle lacked valid Mexican fishing licenses. They were attempting to import the fish into the United States for sale. As a result, the fish were seized as evidence. Charges are being pursued related to the illegal capture of fish in Mexico, fishing without valid licenses, and unlawful importation into the U.S.
