Recent Events Highlight Strained Relations
Canadian sports fans expressed frustrations by booing the U.S. national anthem at recent Major League Soccer (MLS) games. This reaction reflects tension after trade discussions between Canada and the United States faltered, reigniting disputes that began with President Donald Trump’s return to office.
Fans in Vancouver and Montreal made their opinions known during the anthem at matches featuring the Vancouver Whitecaps vs. FC Dallas and CF Montréal vs. Los Angeles Galaxy, respectively. Onlookers took to social media, with one user posting a video stating, “OH GREAT the crowd in Montreal Canada booing the American National Anthem at the Montreal Vs Los Angeles Galaxy soccer match.”
Trade Talks Collapse
The booing followed failed trade negotiations the previous week. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized alterations made by the U.S. at the last minute, deeming them “unfair” and “uneconomic.” Conversely, American officials described the talks as a “missed opportunity” for Canada.
As trade relations sour, the U.S. imposed 50 percent tariffs on various Canadian goods, valued at approximately $20 billion. Included are motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products. In retaliation, Carney announced Canada would impose equivalent measures.
Carney defended Canada’s negotiation efforts by stating, “We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. We have pursued every opportunity to reach an agreement that protects Canadian workers and their families.” On September 8, Canada’s retaliatory tariffs will target U.S. industries such as steel, dairy, and electronics.
Increasing Cultural and Trade Dispute
Relations between Canada and the U.S. have deteriorated significantly since Trump’s second term began. Though the countries maintain military cooperation, trade conflicts and Trump’s comments have fueled negative sentiment.
Alongside tariffs, Canada has limited U.S. alcohol sales in certain provinces, a contentious issue in recent discussions. Additionally, various Canadian boycotts of American products have emerged.
This is not the first time Canadian fans have shown discontent with the U.S. anthem during Trump’s tenure. A poll by the Angus Reid Institute shows 48 percent of Canadians have an “unfavorable” opinion of the U.S., surpassing the 45 percent who view them positively. In contrast, 79 percent of Americans view Canadians favorably.
