British Rabbis’ Reactions to U.K. Sanctions
The United Kingdom’s decision to impose sanctions on Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has ignited division among British rabbis. Their responses highlight concerns about potential threats to Jews residing in Britain.
Several rabbis have expressed support for the sanctions. They have spoken about encounters with violence from extremist settlers in the West Bank. Despite this, Britain’s chief rabbi, who leads the country’s Orthodox Jewish community, joined others in criticizing the sanctions.
Public Signs of Division
These mixed reactions from religious leaders arrive shortly before the Jewish calendar’s holiest period. Recent months have seen violent attacks directed at British Jews, underscoring existing tensions within the community.
“Nobody should ever suggest that they represent the single opinion of any group of Jews anywhere,” stated Rabbi Jeremy Gordon. He recently shared a letter supporting the sanctions and recounting personal experiences with settlers.
Rabbi Gordon emphasized that while British Jews have diverse views on Israeli and British politics, nearly all reject violence. Few align with Israel’s extreme far right.
International Support for Sanctions
The sanctions were announced alongside nations such as Canada and France. The ban targets trade with settlements. In total, a dozen countries have endorsed these sanctions.
