The operator of a boat that capsized in New York Harbor, resulting in the deaths of a mother and her infant daughter, faces criminal charges. Authorities are investigating whether the vessel was an illegal charter, as reported by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 22-foot Bayliner speedboat overturned at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Saturday near Liberty Island, where the Statue of Liberty is located. Rescue efforts led to the retrieval of twelve individuals from the water before police arrived. Police divers subsequently found the woman, age 27, and her 5-month-old daughter in the water. Both were taken to a hospital but were later pronounced dead. The other individuals involved were reportedly in stable condition.
Captain Doreen McCarthy, Coast Guard Sector New York Commander, expressed sorrow for the loss of life. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life last night, and our thoughts are with the victims’ family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” she stated. Additionally, Captain McCarthy praised the swift actions of partner agencies and a Good Samaritan vessel that assisted in rescuing survivors.
Authorities have charged Manuel Hernandez, 46, of New York, with 13 counts of reckless endangerment. Attempts to reach him by phone were unsuccessful on Sunday, and the case has not yet appeared in online court records. The victims’ identities remain undisclosed pending family notification.
Coast Guard officials are collaborating with police to investigate the incident and are dedicated to enforcing the law. An illegal charter involves any passenger-for-hire vessel that lacks Coast Guard credentials, necessary safety equipment, and inspection certificates.
