Maher expressed frustration with the frequent messages of unity during the pandemic, stating, “We’re all in it together” was misleading. He pointed out that many people relied on delivery services while others stayed home comfortably. He sarcastically noted the contradiction of celebrities sharing political messages while retreating to affluent areas.
Despite being a left-leaning celebrity, Maher has often commented on the inability of liberal celebrities to relate to the struggles of ordinary people. He suggested that if everyone were truly “in it together,” celebrities should also participate in roles such as delivery services during the pandemic.
A viral video of celebrities like Gal Gadot, Will Ferrell, and others singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” illustrated the disconnect. The song’s lyrics were considered tone-deaf, as many were facing hardship during the pandemic. Later, Gadot acknowledged the video was “in poor taste.”
