During a recent appearance on Face the Nation, Senator Bernie Sanders defended his decision to initially support Graham Platner, the former Democratic Senate nominee from Maine. Sanders addressed the decision to urge Platner to withdraw from the race following allegations of sexual assault from a former girlfriend.
Asked by host Margaret Brennan if he had any regrets for not acting sooner, Sanders stated, “No, I don’t think so.” He explained that upon hearing the serious allegations, he immediately sought to speak with Platner and eventually urged him to leave the race, which Platner did.
Sanders was further questioned about the vetting of candidates he endorsed. He mentioned the challenge of thoroughly vetting hundreds of candidates but emphasized that those he supports are committed to the working class.
“All I know is, Margaret, that the candidates that we are supporting are standing up for the working class of this country,” Sanders affirmed.
Despite backing Platner through controversies, including offensive social media content and a controversial tattoo, Sanders maintained his endorsement, stating he would not reconsider it even after reports surfaced about explicit messages Platner exchanged while married.
Platner ultimately withdrew from the race after Sanders and other supporters called for him to step aside due to the sexual assault allegation. Meanwhile, Troy Jackson was nominated to replace Platner, receiving significant support despite concerns about his vetting process and past positions.
The selection of Jackson amid Democratic tensions exemplifies the broader ideological divide within the party. Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel expressed concern about the potential impact progressives might have by endorsing candidates with unpopular views.
Sanders commented on the division: “There is a strong division within the Democratic Party… You have an establishment like Rahm Emanuel, who are dependent on billionaire campaign contributors and want to maintain the status quo, and then you have a progressive movement, which… is winning all over this country.”
