Ben Affleck’s Parenting Approach: Teaching Kids the Value of Hard Work

Ben Affleck’s son Samuel seems to have developed a fondness for Lamborghinis, four years after he accidentally backed one into another luxury car. Speaking on his “Animals” co-star Kerry Washington’s podcast, “Street You Grew Up On,” Affleck, now 54, mentioned that Samuel, aged 14, has inherited his liking for luxury items.

Affleck, who shares three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner — Samuel, Violet, 20, and Fin, 17 — explained how he declined his son’s request for a Lamborghini. “I see my son now, you know, and he’s a lot like me,” Affleck said. “My older two ones — they kind of spoiled me because they’re like, ‘No, we don’t want this. We don’t want that.’ They’re aversive.” Samuel expressed interest in a yellow Lamborghini, prompting Affleck’s humorous response, “What? A Lambo? Am I an a–hole in a yellow Lamborghini driving around like at the club?” His son replied affirmatively.

Previously, Samuel was involved in a minor incident with a yellow Lamborghini at 777 Exotics, a luxury car rental dealership in Los Angeles, in June 2022. Affleck allowed Samuel, then 10, to sit in the driver’s seat, leading to the car accidentally reversing into a BMW. Thankfully, no damage occurred. “Affleck loves cars,” a dealership employee told the New York Post, noting that they hoped he would visit again.

This incident wasn’t Samuel’s first encounter with expensive items. In March 2025, Affleck and Samuel browsed sneakers at a convention, where Samuel admired a $6,000 Dior x Nike Air Jordan 1 pair. When Affleck saw the price, he humorously suggested Samuel would need to mow a lot of lawns to afford them.

Co-parenting with Garner, Affleck strives to instill the value of hard work in his children. During an April 2025 appearance on “Today with Jenna & Friends,” Affleck discussed teaching his children that they shouldn’t expect automatic rewards from their famous parents. Though his children don’t value his Hollywood success, Affleck ensures they understand the importance of earning what they desire.

Affleck humorously noted on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” that his children were more impressed by his Dunkin’ Donuts meme than his career. A December 2020 photo showed Affleck carrying iced coffees and a box of Munchkins, leading to viral memes. Affleck later partnered with Dunkin’, directing its first-ever Super Bowl commercial in 2023.

Reflecting on his children’s reactions, Affleck laughed about their admiration for his meme-status rather than his career achievements. He acknowledged humor in aiming for meme relevance, sharing laughs with Meyers.
