A bald eagle, believed to be Jackie, was rescued over the weekend near Big Bear. Jackie is one-half of a well-known pair featured in a popular nest livestream, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley, the wildlife nonprofit behind the cam.
The organization shared on social media that, based on public and rescuer videos and photographs, “it is apparent that the rescued eagle is likely Jackie.” They added that “she is in the best place she can be and getting the care she needs.”
Jackie was seen grounded near Dana Point Park on Thursday and Friday. This park is located in Fawnskin, close to Big Bear Lake. While on the ground, the eagle was involved in an altercation with two sub-adult eagles. The nonprofit noted that cell phone footage showed Jackie defending herself using her talons, although she couldn’t fly far.
The nonprofit reported no signs of Jackie around her nest for several days. Jackie and her mate, Shadow, have been stars of the webcam since 2015. Fans have watched them as they’ve faced challenges, including the loss of eggs and offspring, and successes, such as raising eaglets to maturity.
Their recent eaglets, Sandy and Luna, had their first flight late last month. Jackie was rescued Saturday by the L.A. County Parks and Recreation San Dimas Raptor Rescue. The eagle was then taken to a specialized rehabilitation facility for care.
Fans expressed worry over Jackie on social media once they heard about the injured bird. The Friends of Big Bear Valley warned against “misinformation and speculation online” about the incident and reiterated that fans should not contact the rescue agency, noting that “they do not have the resources.”
One commenter on Instagram expressed concern about Jackie’s absence, stating, “It’s been a very worrying wait this weekend with Jackie MIA.” Another, familiar with Jackie from two years of watching, confirmed, “That’s her, no doubt. I know her better than some of my own relatives.” After learning the rescued eagle was likely Jackie, another commenter hoped for “a speedy recovery so she can go back to her family soon.”
