The parade reflected a show of unity aimed at Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing Europe’s determination to defend itself.
French President Emmanuel Macron, marking his final Bastille Day as president, welcomed around 30 leaders to Paris. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received an enthusiastic reception from European leaders and the crowd as Ukrainian troops marched down Champs-Elysees. Zelenskyy and Macron shared warm gestures at the parade’s conclusion.
Bastille Day coincided with significant forest fires and a heat wave in France, leading to the cancellation of traditional fireworks and firefighters’ events. The day also featured a much-anticipated World Cup semifinal between France and Spain.
The History of Bastille Day
The holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille fortress and prison in 1789. This event ignited the French Revolution, ultimately overthrowing the monarchy. Bastille Day is central to French identity, with celebrations including parades, village festivals, and family gatherings.
The Paris parade, a focal point of the day, takes place beneath the Arc de Triomphe. A French tricolor flag adorned the arch, and air force planes flew overhead, leaving trails of national colors.
Ukraine as a Special Guest
Zelenskyy joined Macron and other world leaders in a special viewing area. Ukrainian troops were present on the cobblestone avenue, and Ukrainian co-pilots took part in the parade alongside French pilots. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen greeted Zelenskyy before the event.
Lance Corporal Patrick Risso, a U.K. soldier, expressed pride in marching beside Ukrainian forces, noting the strengthening ties with NATO.
International Troops Marching Together
The parade opened with around 500 troops from the ″coalition of the willing,″ countries committed to Ukraine’s postwar security. Many had served in NATO operations, and NATO’s chief attended the event. French President Macron described hosting the coalition and Ukrainian friends as a ″great honor.″
The parade featured diverse international participation, with aircraft from Germany, the U.K., Poland, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Spain, and Italy. A record number of 7,600 troops marched this year.
World Cup and Bastille Day Coincide
The day’s events coincided with France’s World Cup semifinal against Spain. Fans filled cafes, bars, and fan zones across France. Discussions between Macron and spectators included France’s soccer prospects.
France’s national flag decorated public spaces, while the Tour de France adjusted its schedule to avoid clashing with the parade.
Heat Impacting Celebrations
Forest fires plagued areas near Paris and in southern France, exacerbated by a heat wave. Consequently, some regions, including Paris, suspended fireworks and traditional firefighter events. Notably, the Eiffel Tower’s fireworks and drone show proceeded as planned, incorporating a drone formation representing the Statue of Liberty, a French gift to the U.S.
