The devastating fire that struck a Bangkok music bar on July 13, 2026, claimed more than 30 lives. Among the victims were four of the six core members of the band playing that night. The fire erupted late Sunday night, resulting in at least 33 fatalities and leaving 17 critically injured, according to Erawan emergency services. Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, head of the forensic institute, confirmed that most victims succumbed to smoke inhalation, while some suffered fatal burns. The cause of the fire at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar is under investigation. The Band’s Tragic Fate
The band, Totsakan, was the house band at the bar and played popular roots music each Sunday. The tragedy struck as the band performed, with members among the first to notice sparks from a circuit breaker. This may have triggered the fire that spread rapidly, fueled by possibly combustible materials on the ceiling. Chaos ensued as people sought to escape through the limited exits amidst darkness.
Band leader Atipat Wijan, known as “Ice,” recounted how his girlfriend and the band’s lead singer, Nahatai Sajjalert nicknamed “Breeze,” could not be revived despite efforts. Initially, it was mistakenly believed that keyboardist Preutthipong survived, but it turned out he never made it out. Drummer Nattapat Thamnita, also critically injured, did not survive. On Wednesday, the band announced the death of another member, Thitiwat Kaewkanha, known as “Din,” who suffered extensive burns.
Seeking Justice and Compensation
Survivors and families of victims visited the police station to testify and seek compensation. Natthaphong Lakhorn, a survivor, described the panic and smoke, initially mistaken for a dry ice effect during the performance. He managed to escape through the back door, aided by a security guard. Despite injuries, he plans to pursue compensation.
Kanticha Singkhon sought belongings of her deceased mother and expressed frustration over the compensation process. A lawyer representing the bar owners stated that each family would receive 10,000 baht (approximately $300), which Kanticha criticized as insufficient to cover funeral costs.
The community demands accountability and support from the bar owners as investigations continue.
